A group of young people from Uganda will be able to tap into the opportunities created by the country’s expanding oil and gas sector after gaining Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) Global certifications.

In total, 50 youths from the Albertine region districts were awarded with different certifications at a graduation ceremony after training in a wide range of technical trades, including pipefitting, electrical installation, electrical maintenance and scaffolding.

Training was carried out as part of an initiative funded by the China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) in conjunction with Zetta Energy Limited.

The programme is part of CNOOC’s work to prepare Ugandans as the country heads to the oil and gas production phase of the Kingfisher Development Area (KFDA), which covers the oil field located in the Kikuube district.

“The ongoing development in the oil and gas sector presents opportunities for the participation of Ugandans and Ugandan enterprises. At the peak of activities between 2023 and 2025, we should have about 160,000 workers that will be required. In addition, across the projects a minimum of $21m dollars of funding for training Ugandans has been committed through the development phase.”

The story was featured on Ugandan website New Vision, which reported that the graduates have been registered on the National Oil and Gas Talent Register.

It also said that William Kasigazi, Deputy Resident City Commissioner in charge of the Hoima East Division, told attendees that vocational skills development is the way to go in fighting the challenges of unemployment among the youth of the country.
