The globally recognised International Competence in Engineering Construction (ICE) scheme helps hundreds of Indonesians each year develop the skills needed to work in industry.

PT Petrotekno, an award-winning ECITB Global licensed training provider based on the Indonesian island of Java, put more than 500 people through the scheme in 2024 and sees the real impact it is making to local people.

Hendra Pribadi, President Director at Petrotekno, said: “The ECITB certification makes a difference for the people of Indonesia because they can use the certificates to work everywhere, not only Indonesia. Some have worked in other countries such as Malaysia, Brunei and Qatar.”

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board’s (ECITB) ICE scheme is a global engineering construction industry (ECI) card that assures the competence of workers by allowing employers to check and validate the skills and job knowledge of their workforce.

ICE Cards are issued after an individual demonstrates they have the knowledge, skills and proficiency to perform a particular role through a quality-assured assessment process, with workers also having to hold a valid International Health and Safety Passport (IHSP).

Petrotekno has delivered the ECITB ICE scheme across Indonesia since 2018, providing training to the oil and gas, mining, power generation and pharmaceutical sectors within the ECI.

Working closely with the Indonesian Ministry for Education, local government agencies, project leads and the ECITB, Petrotekno delivers solutions for training local workforces in Indonesia (pictured main image), including in its more remote regions.

This training has helped the people of the Indonesian province of Papua secure work in the oil and gas industry with bp.

Hendra explained: “At the end of our programme, learners get both national and international certifications, which adds real value as it is globally recognised by industry.

“In Papua, for example, locals couldn’t get a job in the oil and gas project initially because they didn’t have the experience required to be recruited. But the ECITB certification helped substitute the experience requirement, which meant more Papuans were able to work at bp.”

Petrotekno runs a three-and-a-half-month ICE programme, titled the Apprenticeship Programme for Construction Skills. It also delivers this in central Java from its base in Tangerang, west of the country’s capital, Jakarta, as well as on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo.

The programme involves a month of theory on safety and basic construction before the practical elements and a final assessment.

International recognition for Petrotekno

Petrotekno was named Asia Pacific Regional Training Provider of the Year at the ECI Training and Development Awards in November 2024.

It was the second time in three years the company won this regional accolade, having also scooped the award for overall International Training Provider of the Year in 2022.

The awards, organised by the ECITB, celebrate excellence in training and development. Petrotekno was recognised by the judges for its “enduring and indomitable appetite to seek out new opportunities, as well as pursuing innovative solutions for ECITB training”.

The international provider of operations, maintenance and construction skills training was honoured for not only its role in Indonesia, but also for its work further afield supporting ECITB training delivery in East Africa and Papua New Guinea.

“It’s great to be recognised for what we’re doing. We really, truly appreciate it and it was an honour to be given such a prestigious award,” said Hendra.

“Winning the award brings value to our services, so getting recognised by the ECITB is really valuable for us.

“But we never aim for awards. What we have been trying to do is make sure that everybody gets the chance to work, to help the people of Indonesia to work, not only in Indonesia but also abroad.”
